Mahli Rivera
BIO
Mahli Rivera is a multidisciplinary Queer Afro-Latina artist, with a current focus on photography, 35mm Film, medium format and digital. She was born in 1988 in Santurce, Puerto Rico and raised in Massachusetts and Florida. As an artist, she desires to evoke emotion and enjoys creating dramatic pieces that have a sharp contrast between light and shadow.
Statement
In this series I wanted to explore my feelings in regards to being queer and growing up in a religious home. I decided on a multi exposure project because of the many layers that are part of each emotion for me. My visual series showcases my journey of acceptance in who I am and how I show up in this world as a queer Bipoc woman. I want people to look at my images and make them think more deeply within themselves and process the feelings that are evoked from what they see.
